As the sun sets on the open fields of Horizon West Regional Park, a new dawn beckons with the promise of transformation. Nestled in the heart of Hamlin, this treasured park is on the cusp of a remarkable metamorphosis with the commencement of Phase 1 construction.
With the park’s closure scheduled for January 22, 2024, anticipation buzzes through the community. This initial phase, a substantial $10 million investment, is dedicated to establishing the vital infrastructure necessary for the park’s rebirth — including entry drives, park access, retention ponds, parking, and key facilities such as restrooms, a playground, and an event pavilion.
Yet, this marks the beginning of a larger, more vivid dream. The comprehensive master plan for Horizon West Regional Park foresees it as a bustling nexus of activity and leisure. Whether it’s the energetic bounce of tennis and pickleball on sixteen courts, the tranquil journey of a kayak through water, the playful barks from the dog park, or the precision of disc golf enthusiasts, the park is destined to become a mosaic of rich and varied experiences.
The significance of this undertaking extends beyond its vast 215-acre expanse; it lies in its capacity to become the beating heart of our community. The park’s proposed elements — including the Horizon West Branch of the Orange County Library System, multiple sports fields, two basketball courts, a community center, two playgrounds, an outdoor classroom structure, and meandering nature trails — embody a deep-rooted dedication to fostering an environment of inclusivity and health, crafting a refuge for residents, visitors, and nature lovers alike.
Join Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings and District 1 Commissioner Nicole Wilson on Thursday, February 15, at 9:30 a.m. for the groundbreaking ceremony. This momentous occasion marks the first step towards an ambitious dream. It’s a celebration of progress, community, and the unyielding spirit of recreation. The event site is at Hamlin Groves Trail and Mann Road, Winter Garden. Directions
